"Manual therapy, or massage, as it is sometimes called, has often been distorted by the introduction of strange myths and practices, involving ethereal beliefs; at The Inside Out, we use a term Massage Science to distance ourselves from such practices – hence our publications have a scientific approach."  HAR Institute

25th Anniversary Conference in New Orleans
March 26-27, 2010
Train to become an Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist!
Come see how people use Acudetox around the country and the world!

About NADA

The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association is a nonprofit association that conducts training and provides public education about the use of acupuncture as an adjunctive treatment for addictions and mental disorders.

Understanding the principles of both Chinese medicine and chemical dependency can lead to significant benefit in recovery from all forms of drug addiction as well as alcoholism and a variety of mental disorders.

The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association has specific protocols for this type of treatment, which have been carefully developed and extensively tested. Experienced clinicians provide training in a variety of locations nationwide and in coordination with an annual conference.

More than 1500 clinical sites in the US, Europe, Australia and the Caribbean currently use these protocols.

While adapted to Western attitudes and conditions, the NADA method derives directly from the Chinese medicine theory of detoxification. Our best hope for success is unified application of these protocols, which NADA promotes through:

1. Public education about acupuncture as a recovery tool
2. Training of professionals in use of the protocol
3. Consultation with local organizations in setting up treatment sites
4. Distribution of reference materials about acupuncture as an adjunctive treatment technique

Science Based Massage

Massage Science on the Web...

There is a new website that is dedicated to Massage Science and that is anti pseudoscience.  A group of researchers including  Bodhi Haraldsson and Christopher A. Moyer have created this site in order to. "This community is intended for those that support or are interested in science (evidence) based massage therapy. There is a need for science minded therapists to share resources, ideas and support each other."   Dr. Gregory T. Lawton has established a discussion group on this website entitled, "Medical and Clinical Massage Science and Education."

If you would like to join this website and discussion group please go to this web page:

A number of our AHS members have joined the site.

On the Michigan Massage Scene:

The Michigan Board of Massage met on Tuesday December 9th, 2009 for their first meeting.   The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for mid January 2010 but the date has not been confirmed yet.

These meetings are open to the public and we strongly encourage Michigan members of the AMMA to attend and to observe and watch over the rules making process.  In addition the public (you) can comment to the Board at the end of each meeting.  The Board cannot respond to you, but you can talk to the Board.

Representatives of other organizations and schools are already attending and their agendas regarding testing, licensure, and school curriculum is already very apparent.  Bruce Froelich, an attorney who has worked with the AMTA for years, was at the meeting and spoke several times to the Board.  Bruce is also a massage therapist in Midland, Michigan who practices polarity therapy and Upledger Cranial Sacral.

Kathy Gauthier was also at the meeting, and Kathy is the Director of Irene’s School of Myomassology, a massage school also well known for reiki, aura balancing, and third eye clearing training.

My impression of the MI BOM is that it is a well balanced and fair minded group of both professional and public members.

The first problem that has surfaced appears to be that the grandfathering period will expire long before the first massage license can be issued.  This will be a huge problem for hundreds of Michigan massage therapists.  I believe that the law will have to be amended.   The AMMA has already contacted the Michigan Department of Community Health and asked for clarification on this matter.

If you know any massage therapists in Michigan that are counting on grandfathering please give them a heads up on the grandfathering period expiring before license applications are even available (it will be another 12 to 18 months before licensure will begin - if all goes well)  (and it won't)

The massage licensure law went into effect on January 1st, 2009 and provides for a 2 year grandfathering period, and one year is already passed.  The rules will not be completed and licensure will not begin until after the grandfathering period has expired.

Take the Massage Pledge - Stand up for the profession!

The American Medical Massage Association (AMMA) asks, "Have you taken the Pledge yet?"  What is the Pledge?  The Pledge is a statement that you make regarding your personal commitment to the ethical advancement of massage therapy.  The Pledge is your opportunity to speak out for evidence based massage values and practices and against massage pseudoscience and sham.

The Pledge is a way for you to show your fellow professionals, the health and education communities, the public, and your patients that you stand for the highest standards of education, science and practices within the massage profession.

Is it time for you to take the Pledge?

To take the Pledge simply download the Pledge document, sign it and post it on your office wall.  Share the Pledge with your co-workers and associates.  email copies of the Pledge to other massage therapists that you know, post it to your website, and link it to your Facebook, blog, or other sites that you frequent as a massage professional.

Lets get the message out there that we want our profession to represent the highest values possible and that those values are not well represented by pseudoscience or sham within the massage profession.

New Soft Massage Tool Feels Like a Thumb, Multiplies Force, and Sticks to Walls

New Thumbby™ soft massage tool not only feels like a thumb, it multiplies the force applied to it. It requires little hand strength and reduces wear on people's thumbs. The Thumbby™ massager also sticks to smooth surfaces, enabling self-massage of the back of the body.

Portland, OR (PRWEB) October 1, 2008 -- Three years ago engineer Katherine Wolfe noticed that massage tools can hurt both the giver and receiver of massage. She wanted a comfortable massage tool that maximized hand strength, and her quest led to designing the patent-pending Thumbby™ massage tool (http://www.thumbby.com). The Thumbby™ massager is a soft massage tool that feels like a thumb and multiplies the force applied to it.

After an injury left her hands too weak to do massage, Wolfe tried a variety of massage tools. All were made of hard material, and she found that most of them hurt her hands and often hurt the person she was massaging.

Wolfe and co-inventor Susan Baer, a massage therapist for over 30 years, set out to make a massage tool that was soft and comfortable to use. Instead of hard plastic or wood, the Thumbby™ massager is made from a type of silicone that is about as hard as a human thumb. "The Thumbby™ massager is firm enough to use on trigger points but when it meets resistance, it yields enough to not hurt the area being massaged," says Baer. "It really does feel like a thumb to the person on the receiving end."
